Everybody plays the fool …
Feb 11th, 2008 by brangelina
… there’s no exception to the rule.
This morning, Jon Friedman of MarketWatch posted his story: PR-savvy Jolie is making the media look foolish
… on Thursday, there was a bumper crop of serious news stories to cull from. These consisted of Mitt Romney’s exit from the presidential race and several crime-in-progress headlines. But it was clear that the bombshell of Jolie’s visit to Iraq was the media’s money shot that day. It’s clear that the media need Jolie more than she needs the coverage. And we wonder why the public thinks we’re a bunch of knaves. If the United Nations was so star-struck that it felt compelled to give her a special humanitarian designation, that’s fine. But it shouldn’t influence what journalists think.
Hah! She’ll always influence what journalists think. That’s because on every occasion, what she brings to the table makes for good journalism. She just gets bonus points for playing the media as the fool. It’s sooo easy for her. Some say she’s a media whore. Some applaud what she does. No matter what, the media is going to cover it.
Do you know what keeps it perpetually going? It’s the combination of star power, timing, and the strength of the cause she’s promoting. Miss one of these components and you loss the impact of the punch. Angelina is like a boxer delivering well timed jabs. Someone like Oprah Winfrey is always in the spotlight and has become a loud constant noise which you learn to tune out. Angelina jumps in and out just enough to get everyone’s attention to remind them of the important ‘forgotten’ issues. The media will take the bait every time.
